Black, short, and off the shoulder, Princess Diana's eveningwear caused jaws to drop back in 1994 when she arrived at London’s Serpentine Gallery. 

As she stepped out of her car and into a sea of camera flashes, the Princess of Wales was clad in this silk dress by designer Christina Stambolian. Now known as her ‘revenge dress,’ it was a form of self-empowerment where she took control of the narrative against traditional royal protocols that favored modest formal attire. 

It remains one of the 20th century’s most enduring fashion statements. And now it’s coming out of the vault. 

Thirty years after the Princess of Wales auctioned the dress to benefit cancer and AIDS charities in 1997, the dress will go under the hammer at #SothebysNewYork at the Breuer building on 9 December.
