An American flag was unfurled on the Pentagon Friday morning, echoing a moment of resilience seen in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

On Sept. 12, 2001, a day after a hijacked plane hit the Pentagon and killed 184 people, first responders and military members solemnly erected the flag near the charred gash on the side of the building. There was little fanfare and no announcement.

“The search and rescue efforts were still ongoing at the Pentagon. There was a lot of uncertainty still about whether there were survivors, what needed to be done next,” News4’s Megan McGrath recalled. She reported live from the Pentagon in the aftermath of the attack.

Now, the flag unfurling happens every single year, part of the remembrance ceremony.

“It was so incredibly powerful that day,” McGrath said, reporting live from near the Pentagon 25 years later. “People were working, people were grieving, people were still scared, and then you saw the flag just come down and it really buoyed people up, made them feel a sense of renewed purpose and dedication to getting the work done.”

The original flag stayed up for a month. Now, it’s in a museum.
