Solar power has gone from an expensive emerging technology to one of the cheapest ways to generate electricity. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, the global cost of electricity from utility scale solar PV fell by about 90 percent between 2010 and 2024. This dramatic change was driven by cheaper modules, improved efficiency, manufacturing at enormous scale, better technology, and more competitive supply chains. In 2024, solar PV averaged just $0.043 per kWh globally.
