After reproductive function ends, the ovary does not simply become inactive. A 2026 study found that aging mouse ovaries lose much of their reproductive identity while developing stronger immune and inflammatory characteristics. Researchers observed increased immune cells including T cells and macrophages, along with changes in genes involved in inflammation and immune signaling. The findings suggest that post reproductive ovaries may remain biologically active and could influence aging throughout the body, although human implications still require further research.
