The world map may finally be getting a major makeover. On September 4, 2026, the UN General Assembly endorsed a resolution encouraging the use of the Equal Earth projection instead of the traditional Mercator projection. Mercator was created in 1569 for navigation and dramatically enlarges regions near the poles. 

Equal Earth preserves the relative area of landmasses, revealing just how different our mental image of the world can be. Africa, for example, is actually about 14 times larger than Greenland.
