WHERE DOES THAT FIRE COME FROM? 🔥

I’ve coached kids from the inner cities of the US and kids from  Queensland. And I’ll tell you the truth most people won’t.

Some of my American kids grew up with nothing guaranteed. No safety net. Basketball wasn’t a hobby, it was the way out. The gym was warmer than home. The court was safer than the street. When you’ve seen what happens if you don’t make it, “comfort zone” isn’t even a phrase you know.

Now look at QLD. Best beaches in the world. Best weather. Best lifestyle on the planet, genuinely. And that’s exactly the problem in some cases , and why many kids who have the world at their feet , don’t make it to their potential. 

When your worst day still ends with a swim at sunset, why would you grind through an extra hour of ball handling? Why skip the beach with your mates for gym work nobody’s watching? Why give up your school holidays, the ones everyone else is enjoying for two-a-days in the heat?

That’s the real coaching challenge here. It’s not skill. Our kids can shoot, pass, move and have the talent to make their dreams come true. What’s harder to build is the hunger because life isn’t hard enough here to force it out of you. 

You have to choose it. Every single day, with zero external pressure making you. The difference between those top D1 kids, the ones who really make it in American or Australian basketball, they all have one thing in common. They found that fire without needing a life or death reason to look for it. They sacrificed the weekends. They said no to their mates. They worked when nobody was posting about it.

Talent is everywhere. Discipline chosen in comfort is rare. In a time where we see every camp , session and tournament, littered with the word elite , the truth is that most of those players are far from “Elite”. 

Elite isn’t measured by the jersey you wear , or the name of your team. It’s measured in your daily activities, your dedication, commitment and performance when it matters. That’s the difference between good and elite.
