Just because you would do it for someone doesn’t mean they’re going to do it for you.

Just because you would show up for somebody doesn’t mean they’re going to show up for you.

Most of us learn this the hard way because we naturally assume other people operate the way we do. We think, “If I’m there for them, they’ll be there for me.”

We assume they have our best interests at heart. We assume they’ll put the same effort, consideration, and loyalty into us that we put into them.

But people don’t always reciprocate.

You can show up for people. You can help them. You can make sacrifices for them. You can be there when they need you.

And when you need them, they might not be there at all.

I learned this lesson when I was in the Philippines and got dengue fever. I was alone in the jungle, sick, and had to deal with it by myself. Nobody showed up for me.

And that was a hard realization because I had been showing up for other people. I had been helping them, so I naturally expected that same consideration would come back to me.

It didn’t.

And that’s the lesson: your willingness to show up for someone is a reflection of your character—not a guarantee of theirs.

Give because you choose to give, not because you’ve secretly created an expectation that they owe you the same thing in return.

Pay attention to who actually shows up for you.

Because sometimes the people you would move mountains for wouldn’t even cross the street for you.
