The Hoos’ offense was powered by an elite offensive front. Dubbed “The Founding Fathers” by fans for their 31 seasons of combined experience, the Virginia line is the oldest in college football. The Founding Fathers represent a landscape far removed from the strict transfer and eligibility rules that governed the sport only a few years ago. 

The world of college football is no longer ruled by high school recruiting and player development — the transfer portal and roster construction are king. 

So how have NC State and Dave Doeren adapted to this new era? Doeren and his staff have certainly not buried their heads in the sand like some other coaches, as they brought in 20 transfers for the 2026 campaign. However, Dave Doeren did not become the winningest coach in NC State history by building through the transfer portal; he did it by creating a strong culture and having consistent player development. 

While this program model has brought NC State sustained success, keeping developed talent in-house is increasingly difficult in a new transfer portal era. 

If a player becomes a star in Raleigh, it is inevitable that programs with more money and acclaim will come calling. Look at the places that some of State’s outgoing players departed to last season: Hollywood Smothers to Texas, Noah Rogers to Alabama, Jacarrius Peak to South Carolina and Terrell Anderson to USC. 

The transfer portal has certainly added to the chaos of college football, but in the process has leveled the playing field somewhat.
