This August and September, Indonesia's Kalimantan and Sumatra have been devastated by forest fires, which have had a direct impact on poor air quality and public health. As a result, cases of acute respiratory infections (ARI) have also increased.⁣
⁣
This has happened against the backdrop of multiple volcanoes erupting across some islands in Indonesia.⁣
⁣
The El Niño that has been occurring since mid-year has triggered severe drought and resulted in crop failures in various regions, including East Java and Banten, and forest fires in West Kalimantan, Riau, and South Sumatra.⁣
⁣
But El Niño is not the sole culprit. ⁣
⁣
Palm oil and pulp & paper companies that clear land have long been using illegal slash-and-burn methods to maximise their profits. Despite existing regulations, enforcement is often weak, allowing these destructive activities to continue unchecked⁣.
⁣
greenpeaceid demands the Indonesian government urgently act on these forest and land fires and no longer view them as a seasonal disaster. The government must begin addressing the root causes through peatland ecosystem protection and restoration, sustainable water management, and hold those causing and exacerbating forest and land destruction accountable.⁣
⁣
Our sincerest solidarity to those impacted and continue to be impacted by the forest fires and the natural disasters.⁣
