Google scientists have released what is being described as the first complete map of a male fruit fly’s central nervous system, containing around 166,700 neurons and 125 million synaptic connections.

The dataset was made publicly available, and developers wasted no time putting it to the test.

One researcher has already created a real-time simulation featuring 165,122 neurons and 25.5 million connections, linking it to a virtual fly playing Beat Saber while its neural activity is displayed live alongside the game.

The simulated fly is not learning to play entirely from scratch—at least not yet. Its motor system has been trained to reproduce the required movements, while its visual processing is still being developed and reinforcement learning helps improve its performance.

And this is just one of the experiments. The same newly released nervous system map has already been used in projects involving Minecraft, Bad Apple!! animations, Doom, and Mario 64.

A brain map that took years of scientific work to create was released publicly, and within days, people were already transforming it into interactive and playable experiments.

Cool, unsettling, or maybe a little of both? 🤔💬
