Nonprofit newsroom CalMatters is planning to sue UC Berkeley in an attempt to obtain public records data about how much the campus is paying its athletes.

CalMatters’ initial attempts to obtain this information through public records requests were rejected by UCLA and UC Berkeley, both of which cited student-athlete privacy as well as not wanting teams and players to be put at a competitive disadvantage.

The news organization has already sued UCLA for a similar reason and argues the taxpayer-funded public universities should disclose “who receives those resources, in what amounts, and on what terms,” according to the lawsuit.

The Daily Californian had previously sent a public records request to the university in June asking for items such as UC Board of Regents agendas regarding name, image and likeness initiatives, Cal Athletics-specific records held by UCOP and systemwide NIL templates. UCOP closed the request in August, saying it did not “have any responsive data.”
