"At 5:30 a.m., a ship bellowed warning of its approach, which opened my sleeping ears to a garden full of birds atwitter in the morning sun. With a seven-month-old at home, I'd grown used to sudden pulls from the cozy depths of an REM cycle, but away on Martha's Vineyard, in an unfamiliar bed, it took a few beats to recover a sense of place.

I'd left the window ajar overnight to combat the Airbnb's musk, which you could bottle, label "First Guest of the Season," then gift to your worst enemy. A potent mix of dampness and what I feared to be the rank remains of a furry winter squatter.

We were on the Vineyard for a video project, so I thought about hoisting a boom mic out the window for some field soundtracking and rolling over for another half-hour of sleep. But Oak Bluffs is a busy port, and after a few more quaking foghorns, I let go of the groggy night and started getting revved up for the morning's tee time at Farm Neck Golf Club."
