Reflect Orbital plans to sell sunlight at night, thanks to satellite mirrors…

One satellite carries an 18-by-18-metre mirror and is meant to light up a 3-mile-wide area, roughly as bright as a full moon. Because the satellite moves fast, any spot only gets light for a few minutes as it passes overhead. So one mirror won’t turn night into daytime. That’s the dream version — it needs thousands of satellites working together to power a solar farm or light a city.

The real use case is bigger than a party trick. Reflect Orbital wants this for extending working hours, disaster relief, and agriculture — shining light on blacked-out areas so rescue teams can work at night and solar panels keep running.

But not everyone’s excited. The American Astronomical Society, the Royal Astronomical Society, and DarkSky International all filed objections, warning it could ruin the night sky, blind stargazers, mess with telescopes, and disturb wildlife.

So the question isn’t whether we can control sunlight. It’s whether we should.

Would you order a spot of sunlight? Tell me below.
