Guy pulls into the paddock with an FR-S on a big single, 400whp on the dyno sheet taped inside the rear window, and spends the whole first session getting walked by a stock-motor car on Rivals and a set of well-used coilovers. He blamed the tires. It wasn't the tires.

The FR-S punishes you for building it in the wrong order more than almost anything else you can buy for ten grand. Toyota and Subaru handed you a 2,758 lb car with a 53/47 balance, a Torsen out back, and a hood you can see over. The chassis is already the expensive part. Everybody skips straight to the one thing that's actually the cheapest to fix later.

The order that works:

Manual, always. The auto ZN6 is a different car with the same badge and you will resent it inside a month. Walk away from a clean auto and buy a rougher six-speed.

Then suspension, because that's the mod that changes how the car talks to you. Real coilovers, an alignment done with intent, and a rear bar to let the back end rotate on throttle instead of pushing.

Then wheels, and this is where people fumble. Square. 5x100, 56.1 hub, and go 17x9 or 18x9.5 with a 255 all around. Light beats wide every single time on 200hp — you feel every pound of unsprung weight in the steering. Staggered on an FA20 is cosplay for a car that never had the power to need it.

Then brake fluid, pads, a seat that holds you, and about six sets of tires.

Power comes last because by then you'll actually know what you want from it, and half of you will find out you didn't want it at all. The 4,000rpm torque dip is real, but it's not what's costing you seconds on a backroad.

This is the cheapest way to become a genuinely fast driver that Toyota has sold in twenty years, and the people who built theirs in this order are the ones still driving them.
