Guy in the group chat has had his BRZ on jackstands since March waiting on a supercharger kit, a fuel system, and a tune that's been "two weeks out" since spring. Meanwhile the stock-motor ZC6 that shows up to every backroad run on 200 treadwear is the one nobody can hang with. That's the whole joke. Everyone's chasing the 86 that finally feels fast in a straight line, and nobody wants to admit the car was never built to win that argument.

The FA20 makes 200hp and 151 lb-ft and it's not the point. It's a delivery mechanism for a 2,800lb car with a low crank centerline and near 50/50 balance. You don't fix that with boost, you fix the two things Subaru compromised on to hit a price: contact patch and rear grip.

Start with a manual. The auto ZC6 is a different car and no mod list saves it. Then a header to clean up the 4,000rpm torque dip — it won't add real power, it just stops the car from going soft in the exact rev range you live in on a canyon road. Coilovers set for damping and travel, not for how the fender gap photographs. Rear sway bar one setting stiffer than you think you want, because the factory tune understeers on purpose for the insurance company.

The wheels are the actual build. Factory 17x7.5 +48 with 215s is the single biggest thing holding this chassis back. 17x9 +42 on a 245/40 is the sweet spot if you track it and want cheap tires. 18x9.5 +38 on 255/35 if you want the stance and don't mind paying for rubber. Roll the rears either way, 25mm fender lip on a squat ZC6 does not negotiate.

Do that and you've got a car that embarrasses things with double the power on any road with a corner in it, for less than the supercharger kit costs before install.
Save this before you buy the wrong setup.
