The other day at the Wooden Boat Festival I got the privilege of meeting sailing legend Lin Pardey after listening to her speak at the nw_maritime center. To be honest, I didn’t really know what to expect. I figured it would mostly be sailing talk. Boats, storms, passages, and such. But it wasn’t.

A lot of what she talked about was aimed directly toward people who are wanting to chase big dreams, and sitting there listening to her was honestly pretty surreal. She managed to put words to a lot of the feelings I’ve had about what I’m about to attempt. The fear, the doubt, the excitement, etc. At one point she said that one thing everyone she has met who has gone on to sail around the world, seems to have in common is that they are incredibly stubborn. Hearing that made me chuckle.

Afterward she was gracious enough to spend some time talking with me. I’ve gotten somewhat used to being met with judgment from some of the more accomplished people in the sailing world, so I didn’t really know what to expect from her either. Instead, there was no judgment whatsoever. She was incredibly kind, funny, and encouraging.

Right as she was walking away she said something along the lines of, “And most importantly, be sure to laugh a lot.” To which I immediately laughed and said, “That’s the one thing I’m good at.” Lol.

I think that’s probably what stuck with me most. She could have said anything. But the last piece of advice she gave me wasn’t a complex lesson about seamanship. It was to make sure I remember to laugh. I think that is incredibly good advice. Whether you sail or not. Don’t forget to laugh.
