Monsoon season in Arizona comes with a few rules locals learn pretty fast.

Never drive into a flooded wash. It can look shallow and still be strong enough to move a vehicle. If a road is barricaded, turn around. Arizona law can also allow emergency agencies to recover rescue costs from drivers who ignore posted closures.

If you get caught in a dust storm, don’t just stop with your lights on. ADOT recommends exiting the highway if possible. If you can’t, pull completely off the paved roadway, turn off your lights and hazards, set the parking brake, take your foot off the brake pedal and stay buckled until visibility improves. Leaving your lights on can cause other drivers to follow them straight toward your vehicle.

Bring the patio furniture in before the storm hits. Monsoon outflow winds can arrive before the rain and send umbrellas, cushions and trash cans across a yard in seconds.

Don’t stand under desert trees when the wind picks up. Mesquite and palo verde trees can lose large limbs or come down during strong storms, especially when the ground is wet.

And never assume a downed power line is safe. Treat every wire on the ground as energized, stay far away and report it immediately.

Arizona monsoons can go from calm to chaos fast, and most of these lessons are better learned before the storm instead of during one.

Which one of these did you have to learn the hard way?
