Arizona has always been known as a retirement destination, but seniors now make up more than one-fifth of the state’s population.

According to the latest U.S. Census estimates, 20.6% of people living in Arizona are 65 or older. That works out to roughly 1.57 million residents, or about 1 out of every 5 people in the state.

To put that into perspective, residents under 18 make up about 21% of Arizona’s population. That means Arizona now has nearly as many people 65 and older as it does children.

Some parts of the state are significantly older than others. In La Paz County, nearly 2 out of every 5 residents are at least 65. More than one-third of the population in both Yavapai and Mohave counties also falls into that age group.

With Arizona continuing to attract retirees from across the country, the state’s reputation as a retirement destination definitely isn’t going anywhere.
