A Chandler family says a beach vacation turned into a nightmare after a tabletop fireplace suddenly erupted while they were roasting marshmallows, leaving two children seriously burned.

The Petersens were staying in Oceanside when their FlikrFire tabletop fireplace reportedly shot out a large fireball. Eight-year-old Brock Petersen suffered second-degree burns to his face, neck and arms and spent 19 days in a burn ICU. Another child was also injured and both were flown to the hospital.

What the family says they did not know at the time was that federal safety officials had already warned consumers to stop using FlikrFire tabletop fireplaces months earlier. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said the products could cause flame jetting and serious burn injuries, and reported multiple incidents, including deaths and severe burns.

According to the CPSC, the fireplaces were sold online and through major retailers for years. Because the company went out of business, the warning never became a traditional recall with a refund or replacement program.

The Petersen family is now speaking out in hopes other families check their patios before using one of these products.

Have you ever seen or owned one of these tabletop fireplaces? 👀
