A mother in Surprise says a normal afternoon outside with her 4-year-old daughter turned terrifying in seconds when a coyote suddenly went after the child.

The two were outside flying a kite when the mother heard her daughter scream. She turned around, saw the coyote coming at her, grabbed her daughter and immediately started fighting the animal off. At one point, she even pulled off her flip-flop and used it while trying to get the coyote away from them.

The animal still did not back down. During the struggle, the mother was bitten in the face and suffered cuts and puncture wounds, according to reports.
Arizona Game and Fish later responded to the area and removed several coyotes for rabies testing as officials investigated what happened. They say this was the Valley’s first recorded coyote attack on a person since December 2023.

Coyotes are common across the Valley, but attacks on people are rare, which makes this one especially wild.
Would you have known what to do if a coyote came after your kid?
