Tombstone went from almost nothing to one of the most infamous towns in America in just a few years.

It started when prospector Ed Schieffelin ignored warnings about searching for silver near Camp Huachuca.

Someone reportedly told him the only stone he’d find would be his own tombstone.

Instead, he struck silver and gave the claim that exact name.

Then the rush began.

Thousands of people poured into the area. Saloons and gambling halls opened everywhere, money was flying around, and Tombstone quickly earned a reputation as one of the rowdiest towns in the West.

In 1881, that reputation became history when Wyatt Earp, his brothers and Doc Holliday got into a deadly shootout with a group of local cowboys.

The entire thing lasted roughly half a minute, but it became one of the most famous gunfights ever associated with the Wild West.

And no, it didn’t actually happen inside the O.K. Corral.

But gunfights weren’t what ended Tombstone’s boom.

The mines eventually flooded, silver production crashed and people started leaving.

Most mining towns disappeared after that.

Tombstone figured out how to survive by turning its own crazy history into the attraction.

That’s why it’s still around today as “The Town Too Tough to Die.”
