There’s a building on Grand Avenue in west Phoenix that has been operating as the same business for close to four decades, and the reason it’s laid out the way it is comes down to state law.

The Great Alaskan Bush Company sits at 2980 Grand Avenue. The business states it was established in 1986. Other listings put it at 1987, and Better Business Bureau records list a January 2003 business start, which likely reflects a change in ownership rather than an opening.

The building is roughly 10,000 square feet, and it functions as two physically separate clubs under a single roof. One room is topless, serves a full bar, and is 21 and over. The other is fully nude, serves no alcohol, and is 18 and over.

That split isn’t a design choice. Arizona regulation governs what can be served where in adult venues, and the practical result is that clubs offering fully nude entertainment operate without a liquor license. Rather than choosing one or the other, this location built both and separated them. It’s the same reason a number of Valley venues are structured the way they are, and most people who’ve driven past have no idea that’s what’s behind it.

The name is its own thread. The Great Alaskan Bush Company in Anchorage was founded by Edna Cox in 1979 during the Alaska oil boom and has been run by the same family for three generations. The Phoenix location shares the name, but no documented licensing, franchise or ownership connection between the two has been established.

Grand Avenue is the only diagonal street in a city built on a grid, running southeast to northwest along the railroad line. It’s collected a particular kind of business for a century, and a lot of what’s on it has outlasted whatever replaced things everywhere else in Phoenix.
