🏛️ Ulysses and His Dog | Artimo Fine Art (Brussels, Belgium)

Odysseus was gone for twenty years. When he finally returned to Ithaca, he came home disguised as a beggar, his identity hidden from almost everyone around him.

One creature recognized him immediately. Argos, the hound Odysseus had raised before sailing for Troy, lay neglected by the gate, old and weakened. He heard his master, lifted his head, and wagged his tail. Odysseus could not openly acknowledge him without risking his disguise. He wiped away a tear and continued on. After seeing his master return, Argos died.

Joseph Gott carved that moment in Carrara marble, life-size: the hero’s disguise a breath from breaking.

Two centuries later, Christopher Nolan has brought Homer’s epic back to the screen. Nolan has said that Argos’s death scene was “a major reason” he knew he had to make The Odyssey.

After being exhibited @tefaf 2026, Ulysses and His Dog is now on view at @artimobrussels.
