Bryce Underwood and Michigan just survived one of the wildest endings of Week 1.

No. 16 Michigan entered its season opener against Western Michigan as a 27.5-point favorite, but the Wolverines found themselves trailing 12–7 with only 35 seconds remaining. 

Underwood had struggled for much of the night after an impressive opening drive. The sophomore finished 12-of-22 for 170 yards with an interception, while also leading Michigan with 47 rushing yards and scoring its first touchdown on a one-yard run. 

With Michigan’s season opener on the line, Underwood drove the Wolverines toward midfield and launched a Hail Mary as the clock expired.

Incomplete.

Western Michigan’s sideline poured onto the field believing it had just pulled off one of the biggest wins in program history.

But after review, officials determined a Western Michigan defender had touched the ball while established out of bounds with one second remaining, giving Michigan another play. The Big Ten later released an explanation supporting the ruling. 

Underwood got one more chance.

From the Western Michigan 47, he launched another Hail Mary toward the end zone, where JJ Buchanan came down with it for the game-winning touchdown.

Michigan 13. Western Michigan 12. 

Buchanan finished with six catches for 126 yards, but none were bigger than the 47-yarder that saved Michigan from what would have been a historic upset. 

The Wolverines survived, but Underwood’s performance has already created questions entering Week 2. New Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham said Underwood remains the starter “right now,” while making it clear that the job isn’t guaranteed without improvement. 

One second.

One more chance.

And one Bryce Underwood Hail Mary saved Michigan’s season opener.
