Labor Day is a reminder that workers didn’t simply receive their rights. They fought for them.

Black workers have been at the heart of that struggle, from building this country through forced labor to organizing for safer workplaces, fair wages, and dignity. Dr. King’s final campaign in Memphis stood alongside sanitation workers demanding to be treated with respect.

That fight didn’t end in Memphis.

Today, Black workers are still disproportionately concentrated in essential jobs that are too often undervalued and underpaid. We cannot celebrate the labor movement while ignoring the workers still fighting to make a living with dignity.

This Labor Day, we honor the workers who fought before us by continuing the fight they started.
