The best six weeks of the year start today, and most anglers are already winding down.

Three things I change from now, and one thing I ignore completely.

Follow a warm wind, not just any wind. A warm wind carries oxygen, pushes food across the lake and moves warmth with it. A cold autumn wind does the opposite and pushes them off, so check the temperature before you move, not the direction.

Bait the spot before you fish it. Pre baiting is conditioning, not superstition. Feed the same place often enough and they learn to turn up expecting food. It is the most reliable edge there is and it costs you nothing but the trips.

And ignore the barometer. A pressure change is tiny next to a carp moving a few feet up or down. What actually travels with a low is wind, cloud and warmer air, and those are the things worth watching. Read the sky, not the app.

Get those right and October looks after itself.
