I got plugged into Hope in 2020, when I joined the Worship Team. If I’m honest, my faith wasn’t especially strong back then, and I may have joined more for myself than to serve the Lord. That perspective changed quickly when my wife, Hayley, and I took Alpha in spring 2021 and fell in love with the community we found.

After that, we were invited back to be Alpha hosts. I still remember being shocked that I was asked. I had never helped guide a group of people in their faith, and I wasn’t sure I was “spiritual enough.” What I couldn’t see yet was that God was about to introduce me to many amazing people and reshape my heart to be more servant-hearted.

Eventually, after hosting Alpha many times, Hayley and I were invited to join the Alpha shepherd and prayer team. For a long time, I believed I couldn’t pray out loud over people because my prayers weren’t “good enough.” What I learned was that we are simply God’s vessels for prayer, and he loves to hear our voices, no matter the prayer.

Being a host and shepherd, watching lives be transformed and given over to Jesus, has been one of my most amazing experiences. Along the way, Jesus set a new standard in my life: to live in a way that glorifies him and submit to his plans, which are greater than mine.

In 2024, I got the chance to do exactly that when my dad, Al, needed a kidney transplant. I’m adopted, and Al and his wife,Sue, took me into their family and gave me a life I never would have had. They loved me as their own—the same way God adopts us into his kingdom as his sons and daughters.

After going through the testing, I found out I was a match and gave my dad one of my kidneys. Jesus gave his life so we could live eternally with him in heaven. Surely, I could give something I didn’t need to someone who did.

This is a story that could only have been written by God. A little boy from a broken family, a man with a heart to take him in; two people brought together by his design to help one another.

I’d encourage you to let God write your story, too. Get involved and see where he takes you.
