## Caption

A new display in the library highlights the work of Charles Gay, a 1961 SM East graduate who went on to play a key role in NASA’s Apollo missions. The display captures photos, posters, artifacts and diagrams from when he was a NASA computer technician.

After leaving East, Gay joined one of NASA’s ocean‑based tracking ships that were responsible for maintaining communication with astronauts when their spacecraft passed over the oceans. At this time, there were no radar systems that allowed over-ocean communication between Earth and astronauts.

“You think about somebody that went to school here, and then he’s out in the ocean on this big ship and he’s communicating with the people that are in space,” said librarian Jennifer Robinson.
