A foolproof, non-destructive way to dodge and burn in Photoshop — two Curves adjustment layers and the Apply Image command, which uses your photo's own lights and darks to blend the effect in automatically.

THE STEPS
1. Add a Curves adjustment layer and brighten it for your dodge, then invert the mask to black and paint white only where you want the brightening to show.
2. Go to Image, then Apply Image, with Layer set to Merged, Channel RGB, Blending Multiply, Opacity 100, and Invert unchecked — this blends the effect using the photo's own tonal values.
3. Add a second Curves layer and darken it for your burn, invert its mask, and paint white with a large soft brush toward the areas you want to darken.
4. Run Apply Image again on this mask, this time checking Invert, so the effect concentrates in the shadows.
5. Double-click either curves layer any time afterward to adjust how strong the dodge or burn looks — the blend stays realistic because it's built from the image itself.
