THE STEPS
1. Open your image, hit F to go full screen, and get oriented with the three main areas: the toolbar, the options bar, and your palettes.
2. Click through the toolbar to see what each tool does — selections, crop, healing, brush, dodge and burn, the pen tool, and more.
3. Notice how the options bar changes based on whichever tool you have selected.
4. Open, close, and rearrange your palettes from the Window menu, and combine or separate them to match how you work.
5. Save a custom layout by going to Window, then Workspace, then New Workspace, so you can switch between setups instantly.
6. Get familiar with the Layer menu, since layers are where most of your editing actually happens.
7. Skim the rest of the menu bar (File, Edit, Image, Select, Filter, View, Help) so you know roughly where everything lives before diving into the rest of the series.
