Houston has a contract worth more than $50 million a year in front of CJ Stroud, and he still hasn't signed it. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Sept 2 that Stroud is prepared to play out the 2026 season without a new deal, despite the Texans making what they considered a competitive offer that would put him among the 12 quarterbacks in the $50 million club. 

But the real story is what Houston did in April. The Texans gave Will Anderson Jr a three-year, $150 million extension with $134 million guaranteed, making him the highest paid non-quarterback in NFL history. That's $50 million a year. The exact number they're offering CJ Stroud. 

Nick Caserio set a hard deadline: no deal before the Sept 13 opener against Buffalo and talks pause until next offseason. Houston already picked up Stroud's fifth-year option, guaranteeing $25.9 million in 2027, and can franchise tag him after that. Meanwhile Stroud plays the 2026 season for $5.7 million in cash.
