After five months, The Athletic has concluded its investigation into former lead NFL insider Dianna Russini and her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. The scope of the review: • 903 stories and 77 videos she wrote or contributed to • 75 Athletic stories about Vrabel compared against other publications • Her podcast appearances • Roughly 14 Athletic staffers interviewed THE FINDINGS AGAINST HER: • "Russini's relationship with Vrabel was in clear violation of The Athletic's standards. Regardless of whether the relationship was romantic, it was a breach and should have been disclosed." • She never disclosed the relationship to her editors • "When first confronted with the photos by The New York Post, Russini waited two days before telling her editors and managers. She then told a story to explain the photos that did not align with facts, raising issues of trust." • Examples of her writing glowingly about Vrabel that are "in hindsight awkward or even uncomfortable" THE FINDINGS IN HER FAVOR: • "Scant evidence" the relationship impacted her reporting or The Athletic's coverage • "I've not found a clear link to conclude that Russini used her platform to help promote Vrabel or help his teams" • Of roughly 46 stories about Vrabel or his teams, about a third were transactional trades or hires — none were exclusives Russini declined an interview but gave a one-sentence statement: "I stand by any and all reporting I've ever done in my career."
