The Kansas City Chiefs traded for two offensive linemen in five days right before the 2026 season — and the reason is Josh Simmons. 

Simmons, the Chiefs' starting left tackle and their 2025 first-round pick, has a back injury. He missed the preseason game against Tampa Bay and is undergoing additional testing to determine whether the issue is long-term. Starting right guard Trey Smith has been in and out of practice with a hip injury. 

So Kansas City moved. On August 26 they sent the New York Giants a 2028 seventh-round pick for guard Joshua Ezeudu, who spent all of 2025 on injured reserve with a calf injury. On August 29 they sent Baltimore a conditional 2028 sixth-round pick for Diego Pounds — an undrafted rookie out of Ole Miss who the Ravens were releasing on roster cutdown day. 

This matters because Patrick Mahomes was sacked a career-high 36 times in 2025 before tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee on December 14. He had surgery the next day and just sat out the entire preseason for the first time in his career. Ian Rapoport reports he is on track for Week 1. 

The receiver room isn't covering for it either. Xavier Worthy played through a torn labrum last season and finished with 42 catches, 532 yards and one touchdown. Rashee Rice missed OTAs and minicamp. Travis Kelce, who turns 37 in October, led the team in targets, receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. 

Kansas City's win total sits at 10.5 and Caesars reports heavy Under action. Week 1 is Denver at Arrowhead on Monday Night Football, September 14 — the same Broncos who went 14-3 and ended the Chiefs' nine-year AFC West streak.
