🌟 Transfer Student Spotlight: Vanessa Cantu

Meet Vanessa, a Journalism and Mass Communication major at @arizonastateuniversity’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, set to graduate in Fall 2026! 
💬 “My family inspired me to pursue higher education. As a first-generation college student, I want to honor their sacrifices and hard work by creating opportunities they didn’t have. Their encouragement and belief in me motivates me to keep pushing forward and achieve my goals. I also hope to be a role model for my younger brother and others around me.”

Vanessa’s journey began at @reedleycollege, where she participated in a dual enrollment program and graduated from high school with her Associate’s degree already earned—giving her a head start on her path to ASU. 🌟
💬 “The ASU Pathway program helped me get organized and understand exactly how my credits would transfer. It made it clear which classes I needed to take and which ones I didn’t have to retake.”

When she visited ASU, she knew it was the right fit:
 💬 “I fell in love with the campus right away—the size, the community, and all the opportunities stood out to me. The Cronkite School being one of the top journalism programs in the nation made my decision clear.”

At ASU, Vanessa has fully embraced hands-on learning and real-world media experience:
 💬 “I’ve loved being able to be creative, work collaboratively with others, and gain real experience in my field early on.”

🎙️ She’s already making her mark through Blaze Radio, @downtowndevil and the @statepress, where she worked as a photojournalist—plus a social media internship with @phnx_sports!

✨ Her advice to new transfer students:
 “Don’t be afraid of change. Once you find your community, you’ll feel right where you belong. Explore all ASU has to offer and get involved in what you’re passionate about—it really makes the experience your own.”

After graduation, Vanessa plans to earn her master’s degree and pursue a career in sports and entertainment journalism.
