✨Spellings ✨
Writing a spelling out 10 times might make it feel familiar… but that doesn’t necessarily mean your child will be able to spell it independently later.

Instead, try these six fun activities that encourage children to look carefully, notice patterns and retrieve spellings from memory:

✨Beat the grown-up
Say the word without showing it, then both write your best attempt on separate whiteboards and reveal them together. Check the correct spelling and investigate any mistakes. It’s not about passing or failing it helps you discover which part needs teaching.

✨Shower-time spellings
Some times the only time we have to practice spellings is during bath/ shower time and the bonus here is that the kids LOVE it! Paint sticks on the shower/ bath - they wash off super easily.

✨Say it, hide it, write it, check it
Look carefully at the word, say it aloud, cover it, write it from memory and then reveal it to check. If there’s a mistake, focus on that particular part before trying again later.

✨Post-it scramble
Write the letters or meaningful word chunks on pieces of Post-it note, mix them up and race to rebuild the word. For longer spellings, try chunks of the word.

✨Hidden tricky part
Ask your child to identify the hardest part of the word, then cover it with a Post-it note or colour it in for them to fix. Gradually cover more of the word as their confidence grows.

✨Choose it, throw it, prove it
Display three possible spellings and throw a ball at the one you think is correct but don’t stop there! Explain your choice, check the answer and finish by writing the correct spelling from memory.

The activities can be playful, but the important part is that children aren’t simply copying a word while it remains visible. Giving them opportunities to retrieve, investigate and check spellings helps make the learning more meaningful.

Don’t just copy it… look at it, investigate it, retrieve it and check it.

Save this for your next spelling night!
