In a recent interview conducted by Cynthia Mwenja, Dr. Daniel Klem discusses the alarmingly high annual rate of bird fatalities due to bird-glass collisions. However, alongside these rising fatalities, he also notes the growing momentum of bird-safe practices and projects, many of which are directly attributable to his work.

Dr. Klem’s journey began with his childhood fascination with nature and wildlife, eventually leading him to pursue the field of ornithology. Over time, his pursuit established a new area of academic study and, in turn, a new focus for environmental activism.

Current estimates range from 1.28 billion to 3.6 billion bird-glass collision fatalities each year in the US alone, with 70% of collisions fatal and a 350% increase in estimated deaths. The issue, Klem confirms, is that birds do not perceive glass as a barrier, with both clear and reflective glass posing major threats.

Accordingly, Dr. Klem’s research has contributed to many bird-safe initiatives and practices, including bird-safe products, lights-out campaigns, and even the sharing of local radar showing bird migrations.
