PaulNicklen got the concert of a lifetime when he came across this male singing the humpback blues among the coral reefs of the Dominican Republic.

When you think of the animals that depend on coral reefs, whales are probably not the first to come to mind. But humpbacks and corals are more connected than you’d think. One of the benefits of healthy reefs is that they buffer powerful storms and currents, creating the sheltered, shallow waters humpbacks need to raise their calves.

In exchange, the waste excreted from whales after they feed beneath the surface provides essential nutrients that stimulate the growth of phytoplankton and other microscopic life that form the foundation of coral reef ecosystems.
