This is one of the strangest and more disturbing foster-care stories we've ever come across.

A 70-year-old foster mother allegedly traded one of her foster children for an exotic monkey, sending the child from Missouri to Texas to live with someone involved in the exotic-animal business.

The child eventually stopped attending school, prompting questions about where she had gone. Investigators ultimately found her in Texas, malnourished and living around exotic animals.

And then the story gets even more disturbing: investigators discovered allegations involving other children in the woman's care and a long history of exploiting the foster-care system.

One bizarre story — but also an important reminder that the vast majority of foster parents are people doing an incredibly difficult and compassionate job to help children who need them.
