Before artificial intelligence became a global race.

There was 2008 — and a young founder named

Sam Altman standing on one of tech’s biggest stages: Apple WWDC.

At just 22 years old, Sam introduced his first startup, Loopt — a location-based social app built years before “check-ins” became mainstream.

Smartphones were still new. GPS was unreliable.

And the idea of sharing real-time location felt futuristic… even risky.

Loopt’s pitch was simple, but ahead of its time:

Use your phone to see where your friends are — instantly. No calls. No texts. Just awareness.

Apple saw potential. So did investors. Loopt raised millions, partnered with carriers, and became one of the earliest experiments in real-time social data.

But timing is everything.

The market wasn’t ready. User behavior hadn’t caught up. And eventually, Loopt shut down.
Yet this “failure” quietly built something far more valuable.

It trained a founder. It sharpened instincts. It taught lessons about scale, timing, and human behavior.

Years later, that same founder would lead Y Combinator… Then go on to help shape the future of artificial intelligence.

Because in tech, early losses don’t end careers. They build them.

Every revolution has a prototype. Loopt was Sam Altman’s.

And history rewarded the persistence. 🚀
