For a long time , I used to watch her walk toward the classroom door and physically brace, shoulders up round her ears, like she was walking into weather. 

I didn’t have language for it then. I do now - her brain was treating that doorway the way it’d treat a hand on a hot stove.

If you’re reading this thinking “she’s not that sensitive, this won’t apply to my kid” - I thought that too, right up until it did. 
 
This isn’t about sensitivity. It’s biology, and the longer it goes unrecognised the more it generalises past the school gate. Worth catching early, not once it’s everywhere.
