RIP Pop Smoke 🤧

Pop Smoke, born Bashar Jackson in Brooklyn, became one of the defining voices of New York drill before his career was tragically cut short. His gravelly baritone and menacing delivery set him apart immediately, powered by breakout singles like “Welcome to the Party” and “Dior.” He drew from UK drill and Chicago drill influences but gave the sound a distinctly Brooklyn identity, pairing hard hitting 808s with a commanding, almost intimidating vocal presence. Pop Smoke was fatally shot during a home invasion in February 2020, just months before his debut album released. That album, “Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon,” dropped posthumously and hit number one, featuring collaborations with Travis Scott, Quavo, and 50 Cent. His influence on drill and mainstream hip-hop remains massive, with his sound still echoing through the genre today.
