Documented Abuses and Conditions:

The "Box" Punishments: Detainees have reportedly been placed in small 2x2-foot metal cage structures ("the box") as punishment, left shackled and exposed to extreme heat, sun, and humidity without adequate water. 

Living Conditions: Reports describe wall-to-wall crowded cages, tents flooded by heavy rains, overflowing toilets leaking raw sewage near sleeping areas, and an overwhelming infestation of mosquitoes without proper protection. 

Deprivation and Neglect: Inmates have stated they received as little as one meager meal a day—sometimes reported to contain maggots—experienced severe water shortages, were kept under constant 24-hour fluorescent lighting, and were denied basic daily showers. 

Denial: Detainees suffering from fevers, chronic illnesses, and COVID-19 symptoms reported that medical requests were ignored or critical medications withheld for days. Personal religious items, such as Bibles, were also allegedly confiscated. 

Enforced Disappearances: Advocates noted that individuals transferred to the facility were removed from online ICE detainee locator tracking systems, leaving families unable to locate them and blocking access to legal counsel.

ICE awarded a more than $17 million contract to the company behind Alligator Alcatraz to run a converted warehouse on San Antonio’s East Side. This kind of facility goes against San Antonio’s values, and it would hold back an area that’s already fighting for growth.

I am working with the San Antonio community and elected leaders as well as my colleagues in Congress to prevent these inhumane facilities from ever opening their doors. Thank you to all San Antonians who are speaking out.
