Flights from British airports have resumed after a major air traffic control failure caused widespread disruption on Tuesday, with airports warning that it could take time for schedules to return to normal.⁣
⁣
More than 1,000 flights were canceled and hundreds of thousands of passengers were left stranded after the hours-long shutdown.⁣
⁣
Heathrow and Gatwick advised passengers to check with their airlines before traveling to the airport, warning that schedules had been changed as aircraft and crews were repositioned.⁣
⁣
Ryanair said around 150,000 of its passengers were affected after more than 200 flights were canceled, while British Airways canceled or diverted around 100 flights, affecting tens of thousands of passengers.⁣
⁣
The disruption has increased pressure on NATS, the UK’s air traffic control provider, and its chief executive Martin Rolfe. Ryanair had previously called for Rolfe to resign following a major system failure in August 2023, which cost airlines an estimated £100 million.⁣
⁣
NATS said it was working with airports and airlines to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.⁣
