The United States has announced a sweeping ban on imports of Canadian alcoholic drinks, motorcycles and some dairy products, escalating an already bitter trade dispute between the two longtime allies.⁣

The new measures, which take effect September 29, were announced after Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on US goods.⁣
⁣
The latest moves follow US tariffs of up to 50% on around $20 billion of Canadian products last month, after negotiations between the two countries broke down.⁣

The US restrictions cover a wide range of Canadian alcohol, including beer, wine, whisky, vodka, rum and brandy. Some cheese products will instead face a 50% tariff, while paper, aluminum, wood, furniture and other goods have also been added to the tariff list.⁣

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the country has “everything we need to pivot and prosper,” as he urged a further shift away from Canada’s biggest trading partner.⁣

The escalating dispute has also raised questions over the future of the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, which underpins much of the economic relationship between the three countries.⁣
