(2/3) My two week test of the new Leica M11 for mensjournal - link in bio.

My time with a Leica M10 has been limited to a single instance in the past, but one of my favorite film body’s I still use weekly is the Leica M6- this I reference purely due to the functionalities of a manual focus rangefinder. I can imagine jumping to a M11 or any rangefinder would be a bit of a learning curve for those used to SLR’s new and old, especially when dealing with the small focal plane when shooting at f/1.4

So again, for me it was a quick self-introduction to where certain modern settings are, and off to twisting the “usual” settings knobs and manual lens focus ring to start my two weeks of image making with the M11.

One setting wheel of controversy in other reviews so far has been the ISO adjustment, and though it can be set as a custom function on the easier to adjust right thumb wheel, having my film shooting background (one film stock, one ISO setting per roll) I didnt mind the slower adjustment of popping up the ISO wheel and adjusting- I left the more frequent adjustment to the shutter speed wheel (or just leave everything but the lens on Auto, for those lazy days).

Low light performance was impressive for a large megapixel camera, and the added stop of dynamic range and use of pixel binning when dropping down to the available 36 or 18 megapixels is a welcome capability.

The exercise of dynamic range capability often isn’t something one can feel without post production testing, and a great way to do so is a single image at sunset with a still bright sky, and an additional subject hidden in shadows. See image info below- detail and color retention feels like cheating.
