Twenty-five years ago this Friday, the events of September 11, 2001 changed our country and our world. Today, our high school students stepped outside the classroom to learn, ask questions, and reflect on the history and lasting impact of that day.

Students visited thecellorg (Counterterrorism Education Learning Lab), an incredible Denver resource dedicated to nonpartisan education about terrorism and security. Through its exhibits, artifacts, and guided programming, they explored the events and aftermath of 9/11 and how our world has changed in the 25 years since.

We are incredibly proud of how our students approached the experience. They asked thoughtful questions, engaged seriously with difficult material, and showed genuine respect for the gravity of what our country—and humanity—experienced that day.

Some drew connections to the world around them today, including recent antisemitic attacks and the ways vitriol, extremism, and hate can escalate into violence. They had insightful conversations about how understanding how hatred can grow and ultimately manifest itself is an important part of understanding terrorism—and our responsibility to confront hate in our own time.

Students also visited the Colorado State Capitol, learning about state government, the legislative process, and the building’s history. Together, the two experiences invited them to consider our country, its institutions, the threats it has faced, and the role each generation plays in protecting and strengthening our democracy.

For our students, September 11 is history rather than memory. Experiences like today’s help them understand that history more deeply, consider its continued impact, and reflect on the responsibility we all share in shaping what comes next.

We remember those whose lives were lost, those forever changed, and the countless acts of courage and humanity that emerged from an unimaginable day.
