Playing volleyball has taught me just as much about shooting sports as being behind the camera has. 🤝

As an athlete, you learn to anticipate what’s coming and make decisions before the moment happens. I’ve found myself bringing that same mindset into my creative work.

1️⃣ Vizualize
Build the storyboard in your head before you start shooting. Even a 15-second reel needs direction. Think about what gets the viewer hooked and what keeps them watching. More footage doesn’t always make a better video. Continuity and clarity does.

2️⃣ Anticipate
Know your subject well enough to predict what happens next. The more familiar you are with what you’re shooting, the easier it is to position yourself. Playing volleyball helps me read the game and anticipate where the set or attack is going.

3️⃣ Manipulate
Sometimes the shot you want isn’t going to happen on its own. You might have to move an object, adjust your angle, or direct a subject. Ensure to always stay within professional boundaries and respect the environment, but to never interfere with the action.

For documentary style footage, this can mean shaping the environment or asking better questions to bring out a genuine response, without manufacturing the truth. 🫡

The goal isn’t just to capture what happens. It’s to understand what you want to communicate and make intentional choices to get there.
