Conor Cummins describes the crash that nearly ended his life as an out-of-body experience — and the footage still stops people in their tracks fifteen years later.

During the restarted Senior TT in 2010, Cummins crashed heavily at the high speed Verandah section of the Mountain Course while dicing for the lead on his McAdoo Kawasaki Superbike.  He cartwheeled down the hillside in full view of the TV helicopter, sustaining a badly broken left arm, two bone fractures in his back, a dislocated knee, ligament damage, bruising to his lungs, and a hairline fracture to his pelvis.  He underwent four surgeries — one lasting around ten hours — that doctors said could have left him paralysed or dead. 

Cummins has since said he is now comfortable riding past that exact section of the Mountain Course, though the first lap back after the crash was the hardest of his career. (Izoate) At just 24 years old, his age and fitness allowed him to return to racing in under a year — and by 2014 he was back on the podium, in one of the most popular results the TT had seen in years.
