This country is one of the most inspiring places I’ve photographed… but honestly? The best memories are rarely found in the perfectly curated images you see on this app. It’s usually those slow, unremarkable moments — sleepy sunrises, deep life chats, messy breakfasts of peanut butter sandwiches and dried mango and a strong cup of coffee — that you find yourself missing years later….

…like pulling into the shade of the ana trees in the dried up Hoanib River, sitting back with our chia seed pudding, and turning around to find a wild desert elephant heading straight for us.

We retreated into the car… but he parked himself a meter outside the window and watched us finish our coffee from the front seat. 🐘

…or unzipping our rooftop tent at Spitzkoppe to see the mountains glowing orange, then hiking the little koppie next to our campsite for morning coffee with 360 degrees of desert. 🏜️

…or trekking across the sand dunes to Deadvlei before dawn, shooting absurd creative concepts in this fever-dream of a location, then giggling about it afterward over a few cups of coffee next to those 900-year-old dead trees.🪾

No rush to leave, no agenda to follow, no scene to perfectly set….

Those are the moments where my surroundings seep into my bones and I think, “Wow, what a bizarre and unexpected adventure life has been to lead me to this rock, looking at this view.”

We drove some 5,000 miles and it wasn’t always picture perfect or peaceful. But ritual has purpose. Ritual pulls you into the present moment in the midst of a jam-packed itinerary.

And coffee is my favorite part of the day back home (can anyone else relate? 😅), so I wasn’t about to skimp on it out there.
