An elbow dislocation happens when the radius and ulna are forced out of their normal relationship with the humerus, often from landing on an outstretched arm or taking a high-force impact.
Now here’s our plan,
First step: assess the nerves and blood vessels, obtain imaging to rule out associated fractures, then reduce the joint back into position. A simple, stable dislocation can often be managed without surgery. Surgery becomes more likely when there’s an associated fracture, significant ligament damage, persistent instability, or the joint can’t be maintained in proper alignment.

Rehab starts with protecting the healing structures while introducing controlled range of motion as early as medically appropriate to limit stiffness. From there: restore full ROM → rebuild grip, wrist, biceps/triceps and shoulder strength → progress into closed-chain loading, stability and reactive work → return to punting and eventually contact.

The goal isn’t just getting the elbow back in place—it’s getting it stable, strong and confident enough to handle football again.

Exact treatment and timelines depend on imaging, stability and associated injuries.
